If you need to remove your propeller shaft and it is going to pass thru any version of a Tides Marine Shaft Seal, you will need to have a Seal Protector (it's also called a Hat or Installation Tool, Red or Black in color) placed in the seal so that your shaft key way or the splines on the propeller shaft do not cut the Lip Seal inside the Shaft Seal Housing. If you don't have one of these protectors, you can get one from Tides Marine. If you are in a hurry and can not wait for a protector, you can do the following at your own risk. Wrap the end of the Shaft where the spline and key way are with a thin cellophane type material, and then use some electrical tape and wrap it over the cellophane taking care not to overlap the tape as this will make the shaft thicker. Next make a soapy water solution and coat the end of the shaft where you have put the cellophane and tape on and then carefully slide the shaft back thru the seal. Leave the cellophane and tape in place or if you have to remove it, remember to replace it BEFORE replacing the propeller shaft.
