Rudder Port/Bearing System Type D Type 1 Installation

Installation Overview
The following is a brief description of a "Type One" installation. Detailed directions and drawings are available upon request and should be followed closely.

Mold Modifications:
- Locate the exact position of the rudder stock center on the mold surface.
- Carefully drill a hole perpendicular to the surface large enough for the plug bolt/bushing.
To install the liner prior to lay-up:
- Prepare the liner for lay-up by roughing up the outer surfaces with a grinder and wipe clean with thinner.
- Screw the UHMW plug into the liner until the bottoms are flush.
- Mask the top of the assembly to protect it from overspray/excess resin.
- Locate the assembly against the mold surface and bolt in place through the mold hole.
Lay-up procedure:
- Begin the hull lay-up in normal manner.
- Cut an X in the cloth above the liner so that it can be laid down and around the flange base with tabs against the outer wall of the liner.
- On subsequent layers, stagger the position of the X cuts so that the tabs overlap each other.
- Taper the lay-up to the liner step.
- BEFORE DE-MOLDING, REMOVE THE PLUG BOLT. (Leave the plug in place until the time of rudder installation.)
To Install the Type-D Bearing/Seal assembly:
- Remove the UHMW plug from the liner.
- Inspect the interior shoulder of the liner. Be sure it is clean and free from dust/debris.
- Confirm that the "O" ring under the shoulder of the TYPE-D Bearing is in place. Add a bead of marine sealant (such as LifeCaulk® or 3M® 101) to this area.
- Thread the Type-D Bearing/Seal into the liner until the bottom is flush with the hull, compressing the "O" ring.
Installation Types
The procedure for modifying the mold and installing the liner pre-layup differs according to the type of hull being produced. The following are the three most common variations. Click the name or drawing for the Product Installation.
TYPE ONE- Molds with an existing "flat" at the rudder port location which will use the standard flange type liner.
TYPE TWO- Molds which require modification to achieve a "flat" surface or pocket for mounting a standard flange type liner.
TYPE THREE-Molds which require modification to accept an angled liner to match deadrise and rocker angles.
