Upper Rudder Bearing - STD

Product Overview

Upper Rudder Bearing - STD

The Tides Marine Standard Upper Rudder Bearing is designed for applications where the bearing is mounted directly on top of the rudder shelf. It is an ABS approved self-aligning design which accommodates up to 10 degrees of off-axis alignment between the mounting surface and rudder stock. As a result, it requires no shimming during installation and won't load up the shaft during use.

The URB-STD is lighter than conventional cast bronze units. The unit consists of a UHMW ball-type bearing captured within a plastic housing. The download of the rudder is carried by the unit when a rudder collar is installed above the bearing. This all plastic design eliminates metal-to-metal contact and the problems of abrasion, electrolysis, and corrosion.

The URB-STD is self lubricating and maintenance free. Steering is smoother and quieter as a result. Minor mounting adjustments to the steering components may be necessary if the height of the unit is different than the metal pillow-block style bearing it is replacing.

Product Installation

Installation

The following is a brief description of the installation procedure for the URB-STD. Complete installation instructions are included with each unit and should be followed closely.

  1. Block up the rudder securely.
  2. Remove steering arm/quadrant from the rudder stock.
  3. Disconnect rudder collar and remove.
  4. Remove existing rudder bearing bolts and remove rudder bearing.
  5. Slide the URB unit onto the stock and into position on the rudder shelf.
  6. Align/rotate the unit so that new bolt holes can be drilled through the shelf. (If necessary, backing plates are available for added strength).
  7. Drill through the shelf, using the holes in the unit as a template.
  8. Insert the required number of SS hex bolts (with washers and lock washers) through the assembly and secure to the rudder shelf. Large fender washers or backing plates should be used against the rudder shelf.
  9. Reposition the rudder collar so that it contacts the bearing "ball" in the URB unit and secure. Use washers as necessary to align rudder collar with original set screw "dimples".
  10. Remove the blocking from the rudder and verify that the rudder swings freely.
  11. Reassemble the other steering system components (arm, quadrant, etc.).

Before Ordering

Before placing your order, there are several measurements which must be taken/confirmed: Using a caliper or micrometer, find the exact diameter of your rudder stock "A" (.000 in.). Bronze stock may run slightly under nominal. If necessary, Tides will size the bearing bore accordingly. Contact Tides Engineering with measurements. Find the corresponding stock size from the table below. Confirm that there is enough height between the shelf and the deck (generally 2X the overall height "B"). Confirm that there is clearance for the overall diameter of the unit "C". Also, check the position and mounted height of the other steering components to determine if any adjustment will be necessary. If there are height restrictions, the URB-LP configuration would be a better choice.
